Gottfried von Bilstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried von Bilstein († 1289 ) was abbot of the Grafschaft monastery from 1272 to 1289 .

Gottfried came from the house of the noblemen of Bilstein . His brother was Johann I , who was temporarily Marshal of Westphalia .

Gottfried's predecessor in the office of Abbot of Grafschaft was Widekind von Wittgenstein. His administration had had a negative impact on the monastery’s financial situation. In addition, there was a fire in 1272 that almost completely destroyed the original monastery buildings.

Von Bilstein was initially busy with the reconstruction of the plant. The new buildings from Gottfried's time were architecturally modest makeshifts that were later completely replaced by other buildings. Gottfried was hindered in the construction of the new building by the Vogt of the monastery Adolf von Grafschaft .

Von Bilstein was successful in redeveloping the monastery’s financial situation. He succeeded in persuading the Lords of Padberg to forego their income from one of their fiefs in favor of the county. From his brother Johann I, in his capacity as chairman , Gottfried succeeded in obtaining the exchange of some free goods, which turned out to be an advantage for the monastery. In addition, he brokered an agreement in 1285 in a dispute between the heirs of Adolf von Grafschaft and the House of Wittgenstein. This also had a positive effect on the situation of the monastery.
