Widukind von Wittgenstein

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Widukind von Wittgenstein († November 14, 1272 ) was abbot of the Grafschaft monastery from 1258 to 1272 .

Life

He came from the family of the Counts of Wittgenstein . In 1258 he transferred in long lease for an annual Mark serious pennies to Siegfried von Wittgenstein and by the Counts of Westphalia (ie the counts of Werl and later by Arnsberg ) bailiff used the monastery, the noblemen Adolf von County (at Castle North Erna in Nordenau), a mountain on which they founded the later city of Berleburg . In 1322 Siegfried II von Wittgenstein was able to persuade Abbot Widukind II von Grafschaft to finally sell Berleburg. In 1261 Adolf von Grafschaft gave the monastery a pension from the Zehnthöfe von Hundem . Later there were conflicts between the abbot and Adolf von Grafschaft.

In 1270 Widukind made a decision that was serious for the history of the monastery and that strengthened the abbot's position in relation to the community. Contrary to the wishes of the monastery founder in Anno II, he separated the monastery property between the abbot and the convent. The abbot now received the income from the prelature, the tithe and a third of all income. However, he also had to accommodate the spiritual and secular guests. He exercised the feudal rights alone and was able to occupy all secular and spiritual offices of the monastery. A short time later the monastery burned down. This was seen in part as a divine punishment for the abbot giving away numerous estates to his family and loosening monastic discipline. He resigned his post as abbot and is said to have died of grief over the destruction of the monastery.
