Gotthard Wolf

Gotthard Wolf (born December 27, 1910 in Breslau ; † November 8, 1995 in Göttingen ) was a leading exponent of scientific film . He has made a particular contribution to the methodological foundation of the research film.

Life

Wolf studied at the Technical University of Breslau , where he graduated as an electrical engineer in 1933. He received his doctorate in 1937 in Breslau with the dissertation "Problems of warning (all-clear) of the population of large cities in air raids". In 1936 he joined the Reich Office for Educational Film (later also known as the Reich Institute for Film and Image in Science and Education ) as a consultant .

Since 1952 he was the founding editor of the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica , an important international series of research films. In 1953, the research film department at RWU, which had come to Göttingen during the war, was renamed the Institute for Scientific Film (IWF). In 1956 the institute became legally independent with Wolf as the founding director.

1973 Wolf received the culture award of the German Society for Photography . He held honorary professorships at the Technical University of Hanover and the University of Göttingen and was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society .

Wolf retired in 1976. On June 22, 1976, he received the Federal Cross of Merit .
