The Goudier Island is an island in the southeast of the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located in front of Wiencke Island in the natural harbor of Port Lockroy . The rocky island is the location of a small Antarctic station. Goudier Island also serves as a nesting place for gentoo penguins .
The Port Lockroy research station was founded on Goudier Island in 1944 and closed again in 1962. The buildings were restored in 1996 and have served as a destination for cruise ship tourism ever since . A small museum is operated and at times the only post office in Antarctica (according to the company itself) .
