Gouves ( Greek Γούβες [ ˈɣuvɛs ] ( f. Pl. )) Is a resort with about 540 inhabitants on the north coast of the Greek island of Crete .
Recognized as a rural community (kinotita) in 1925, Gouves was elevated to the status of an urban community (dimos) in 1990 in the course of some incorporations and expanded again in 1997 through incorporations. This community was incorporated into Chersonisos in 2011 , where Gouves has since been one of four parishes.
The uninhabited island of Dia is part of the municipality of Gouves.
The name Gouves comes from Gouva, which means something like 'hole in the ground '. In Crete it was used to designate a warehouse in the ground for grain. Gouves is about 20 kilometers east of Heraklion, the capital of the eponymous prefecture. There are some archaeological sites of the Minoan culture near the beach .
The place was first mentioned in 1387 in the Chandax archives. In the register of Francesco Barozzi the place is first mentioned in 1577 as Guvos , later in 1583 as Guves with 252 inhabitants. Gouves is the birthplace of the Greek poet Ioannis Konstantinidis.
