history

In 1837 Sir Henry Blake sold the 25 acre (10.1 ha) property to Thomas Harper , who renamed it Springfield and built a house on it. However, because he became overindebted, the property passed into the hands of Robert Sharry Harper, who was the trustee for the marriage contract of Mary Sharry Harper , née Amory. When the Archdeaconry of St Kitts (Archdiaconate) was established after the Diocese of Antigua was founded in 1842 , efforts were made to have the Rector of St George housed in a building that better suited his new position. Hence, Francis Robert Brathwaite , the first archdeacon, bought Springfield from the Harpers in September 1848. However, he became embroiled in a scandal and soon lost his psoten. In 1854 the house was used as a hospital for cholera patients for a short time . In 1855 Springfield House was rededicated (conveyed in trust) to be used, among other functions, temporarily by the governor, the Privy council and the Assembly . After renovation work, it then became the residence of the then Rector, Venerable Archdeacon Henry Willoughby Jermyn (1856). The property was the residence of the following rectors until the archdiaconate was dissolved in 1874.

In 1946, after extensive renovation work, Sir Frederick Albert Phillip, the then governor, moved into Springfield House. Today Springfield House is known as the Government House of St. Kitts & Nevis and is the official residence of the Governor General.
