The glycoprotein gp130 (first described as "Interleukin-6-Transducer-Chain" or "Interleukin-6-Signal-Transducer" ) is an important protein that transmits the signals of some cytokines to the target cells and thus has a receptor function. These cytokines include interleukin-6 , interleukin-11 , oncostatin-M , the ciliary neurotrophic factor, and the leukemia inhibitor factor . Using gp130, these cytokines activate target genes that are involved in cell differentiation, cell survival, apoptosis and proliferation . The members of this cytokine family have pro- and anti-inflammatory properties and play a role in haematopoiesis , the acute phase reaction and the immune response of the organism.

The protein is encoded on chromosome segment 5q11 (with 17 exons ), the transcribed protein contains 918 amino acids and a molecular mass of approx. 130 kDa.
