The bony fish (Albulidae) are a family of bony fish comprising 13 species in three genera . They stand alone in the order of the fish-like (Albuliformes).

features

Bone fish have an elongated body covered with silvery white cycloid scales . The head is scaly and set off from the body by a ring of large scales. The mouth is pointed and subordinate in the genus Albula . The swim bladder is large and can be used to breathe air . Bone fish live pelagic in the sea, less often in brackish and fresh water. They feed on benthic invertebrates . Bone fish are known from fossils from the Cretaceous period .

Their larval form, the Leptocephaluslarva , shows that they are related to the eel-like (Anguilliformes). They live mainly in the sea, but also in brackish and fresh water in the tropics. Their maximum length is 1 meter.

Internal system

The fish family is divided into two subfamilies.

Subfamily Albulinae

The species of the subfamily Albulinae have a short dorsal fin base, the dorsal fin has 16 to 21 fin rays . The number of gill trap rays from 15 to 17, the number of Branchiostegal rays from 10 to 16. The gill region is additionally protected from below by a narrow, centrally located throat-bone plate (gularia). The maxillary and tongue are toothless. Molars are found on the parasphenoid . Scale formula: SL 66-84, 69 to 80 vertebrae.

Subfamily Pterothrissinae

The species of the subfamily Pterothrissinae have a long dorsal fin base, the dorsal fin has 55 to 65 fin rays . The number of Branchiostegal rays is six. An additional throat-bone plate (gularia) is missing. Each maxillary has six to seven teeth. Scale formula: SL 85-112, 107 vertebrae.
