The green alternative in the councils of NRW e. V. (GAR NRW ) is the local government association (KPV) of green / alternative local politicians in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . The GAR NRW, as the state KPV with the largest number of members in Germany, assumes network and coordination tasks for local politicians who feel committed to ecological, social and democratic local politics, and participates in the development of local green principles. To this end, the association u. a. Conferences and technical discussions on political principles and current issues. The GAR is a registered association and not a party branch of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen . Membership is open to all persons and political groups who support green-alternative local politics . GAR NRW was founded in 1985 in Duisburg and is based in Düsseldorf. The association has over 2,000 members, including the council members, not including knowledgeable citizens and committee members (as of June 2018).

As a local political association, GAR NRW receives grants for institutional funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The education and training of citizens for activities in local self-government is funded.

Members

The members of the GAR NRW include members of the representations of the cities , municipalities and districts, members of the district representations , knowledgeable citizens active in committees, employees of the municipalities as well as people who have an office in the public administration or a role with the Greens with local political relevance .

The managing directors of GAR NRW are Hilde Scheidt and Andreas Wolter. The five-member GAR board is gender-based.
