Green Arch Paunsdorf

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Green Arch Paunsdorf is a landscape area in the north-east of Leipzig . The overall landscape architecture concept of the Green Arch Paunsdorf results from an urban development and landscape planning implementation competition in 2000. Afterwards, high-quality recreational areas were created in connection with nature conservation strategies from agricultural and military fallow land.

The Green Arch Paunsdorf surrounds the Paunsdorf-Nord prefabricated housing estate in the west with the Paunsdorf public park in the north with the Heiterblick grazing project and in the east with the Paunsdorf grove . Together with other areas in the northeast, these three parts have formed the Paunsdorfer Wäldchen - Heiterblick landscape protection area since 2011 .

Public park Paunsdorf

The Paunsdorf Citizens' Park was built on a 12.2 hectare wasteland west of the Paunsdorf-Nord prefabricated housing estate, which was used for agriculture until the early 1990s. Tree-lined avenues and walking paths surround a central landscape lake that is about 350 meters long and about 200 meters wide. The lake is about two meters deep. A pedestrian and cyclist bridge spans it at its narrowest point, apparently creating a north and a south section. The lake acts as a near-natural rain-collecting system for the largely sealed industrial area Heiterblick to the west, especially after the establishment of the Amazon company . A whirlpool system on the northern shore of the lake with an attached cleaning ditch ensures the water quality, which also ensures water circulation in the lake. The lake also serves as a fishing water with disabled access.

During the construction of the lake, two mounds were heaped up from the excavation , which result in a varied landscape structure. The southern hill, to which a barrier-free path leads, was designed with a seating group to become a resting and viewing point.

A meeting place for young people and a children's playground complete the local recreational offer of the Bürgerpark for the 17,000 inhabitants of the prefabricated housing estate.

Under construction (2016) is a publicly usable path connection between the southwest corner of the park and the old town of Paunsdorf with a green open space with play and sports areas.

Heiterblick grazing project

Since 2004 a special biotope project has been maintained on the former military area of the Heiterblick barracks, where the Leipzig combat groups also practiced during the GDR era . After the end of its military use after the fall of the Wall, rare animal species such as the moor frog , crested newt as well as dragonfly and bird species found an ideal habitat in the 35 hectare site with open meadows, wooded areas and ponds .

In order to protect the landscape from forest cover, the year-round grazing was set up by wild herd animals . Water buffalo and Przewalski's horses prevent the spread of woody growth and displace stocks of land riding grass and introduced plants such as the Canadian goldenrod . Open water areas and grassland with flood turf developed extremely positively thanks to grazing.

The entire area is fenced. A circular path of 2.6 km in length leads, mostly close to the fence, around the entire area. At the southern edge of the area to the Paunsdorf-Nord residential area, an observation terrace was built in connection with the Paunsdorf public park in 2004.

Paunsdorf woods

The Paunsdorfer Wäldchen is, on the one hand, a wooded area 800 meters long and 400 meters wide, which runs in a north-west-south-east direction, connects to the Heiterblick grazing project via Heiterblickallee and extends to Bundesstraße 6 (Permoserstraße). It is crossed by some forest trails. This "old" Paunsdorf forest is a closed deciduous forest, which is joined in the southeast by a more open forest landscape that has arisen from former fallow land and is also used as a sheep pasture.

The Lösegraben , which drains the area, runs along the southern and western edge of the Paunsdorf forest .

It was not until 2014 that the old Paunsdorf woods became the property of the City of Leipzig through purchase. After that, forest maintenance work was initiated.
