The Grüneklee-Spitzmausrüssler ( Ischnopterapion virens ) is a weevils from the subfamily of the Apioninae .

features

The beetles reach a body length of 1.8 to 2.6 millimeters. Their body is shiny blue-green, especially the wing and pronotum . The nearly square pronotum has a less dense and less strong puncture. The wings are covered with dark hairy rows of dots in the longitudinal direction. The rostrum is more curved in the females than in the males.

Occurrence

The species occurs in the Palearctic . In Europe it is widespread and mostly common. To the south, their occurrence extends to North Africa. The species was introduced in eastern North America. It was first detected in Pennsylvania in 1994 .

Way of life

The beetles can be found from April to October. In summer and autumn as well as in the following spring, the beetles can be found feeding on the leaves of various legumes (Fabaceae), especially clover ( Trifolium ). The larval development takes place within the stems and roots of the host plants. The beetle species is considered an agricultural pest . The beetles can seriously damage freshly sown clover populations when they occur in large numbers.
