The Schmitt family tomb is a memorial in Darmstadt . It is reminiscent of the Seifen-Schmitt business family from Darmstadt.
History and description
The tomb of the Schmitt family is a typical example of Expressionist tomb architecture in Darmstadt's cemeteries. The grave complex consists of a kind of courtyard with lateral colonnades and a facade-like rear wall. Typical of the construction period are the square columns that become wider towards the top, the protruding gable and the zigzag ornament .
In the center of the facility is an expressionistically designed sculpture of a naked youth leaning against a column . His left hand grips a Wehrmacht helmet with a wreath of oak leaves. The stele bears the inscription: " KATJAKOWA / 10.10.41 ". The sculpture by Fritz Schwarzbeck , erected in 1942 to commemorate his son who died in the Soviet Union - one of the few works of art from the time of National Socialism in Darmstadt - was overturned and damaged in 1994.
