The tomb of Christoph Heinrich Theodor Müllenbach is a listed tomb on the Volberg cemetery in the Rösrath district of Hoffnungsthal . The sculpture of the Volberger Angel , designed as a figure stele , was created by the Cologne sculptor Ferdinand Custodis .

Monument description

The tomb, designed as a figure stele, is located in the Volberg cemetery on field 2, row 39, number 5. The monument has a total height of 4.20 meters. The footprint of the pedestal is 0.77 meters wide and 0.62 meters deep.

The marble figure stele rests on a four-step sandstone pedestal. A profile end leads over to the shaft, which is decorated on the front with a recessed inscription plate made of marble. The motif is finished in a semicircle. Above that sits a base developed over an octagonal floor plan, the side surfaces of which are decorated with tracery. On it stands a life-size angel with richly feathered wings. He wears a long, wide, pleated dress that is belted over the hips. A sleeveless coat lies over the shoulders and is held over the chest by a fibula. With his left hand he gathers the stole for the collected rose blossoms, in his right he holds a kinked rose stem. The curly hair that falls over the shoulders is held in place by a tiara.

sculptor

The figure, also known as Engel von Volberg , was created by the Cologne sculptor Ferdinand Custodis . The tomb is signed on the front of the sandstone plinth with F. Custodis in Cologne . Since Müllenbach did not die until the end of 1874 and Custodis was busy building the war memorial in the former Volberg churchyard in 1875, the completion of the angel can probably be dated to the end of 1875.

inscription

In addition to the personal data of the deceased, the inscription contains biblical quotations from the 1st Epistle of Paul to the Corinthians (front) and from Psalm 90 (back) as funerary sayings.

Here rests in God,

It will be sown perishable

and when it has been delicious it has been

Monument protection

The tomb of Christoph Heinrich Theodor Müllenbach was added to the list of listed buildings in the city of Rösrath in 1988 as monument no .

Inspired by Michael Werling , the director of the Institute for Building History and Monument Preservation at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences , the Rösrath History Association had Ferdinand Custodis' sculpture Engel von Volberg extensively restored in 2012.

Historical background

Christoph Heinrich Theodor Müllenbach was born in 1803 in the Hofferhof district as one of 12 children in the now listed Hofferhof 68 house . At the age of eight he lost his father, who was emaciated at the age of 51 . His first wife died in childbirth in 1833, two years after they were married . After the death of his mother in 1838, Christoph Müllenbach inherited a considerable inheritance. Together with his second wife Bertha Schulz, he again founded a family from which seven children emerged. He became a successful merchant and innkeeper in Volberg, today's hope valley.

reception

The restored tomb of Christoph Heinrich Theodor Müllenbach was presented to the public in October 2013 together with the tomb of Johann Wilhelm Christian Blech, who was murdered in 1874, as the "Monument of the Month". With the aim of bringing the concerns of monument protection and local historical research into the consciousness of the citizens, the “Monument of the Month” brings ten monuments or objects worth seeing in the city of Rösrath into the public eye every year. The selection of the monuments is made by a committee consisting of representatives of the city council, the city administration, the history association Rösrath and an expert citizen.
