Ferdinand Custodis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ferdinand Joseph Friedrich Custodis (born April 9, 1842 in Cologne ; † 1911 there ) was a German sculptor . His work is particularly to be assigned to historicism .

Life

Ferdinand Custodis grew up in a foster family after the early death of his parents . Nothing is known about his training. From 1871 he worked in the studio of the Cologne cathedral sculptor Peter Fuchs and was involved in his life's work to produce around 700 sculptures for the Cologne cathedral . Even before the portal sculptures on the west and north facade of the High Cathedral were completed, Custodis set up his own business with the figurative decoration of two fountains in Kleve . Custodis ran his studio at Palmgasse 6 in Cologne.

In addition to a large number of sculptural works on both sacred and secular buildings, Custodis was successful as a tomb builder in and around Cologne. In Cologne's Melaten Central Cemetery alone, 22 grave monuments that were created by him can be located . From 1905 his son Friedrich Custodis continued the sculptor's studio. Ferdinand Custodis was married to Agnes Ostermann from Aachen .
