The Hofferhof 68 building is a listed building in Hofferhof , a district of Rösrath in the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ). It is the seat of the grain distillery "Hoffer Alter" Walter Müllenbach GmbH .

location

The district of Hofferhof is located above Hopesthal on a mountain plateau to the south or west of Hofferhofer Strasse, which as district road 23 connects Hopesthal and Stöcken . In the south runs the street In der Schneekaule , which leads to the district of Lüghausen . The Hofferhof 68 building itself is located in the northeastern part of the hamlet, which had around 40 inhabitants in the summer of 2015.

Building description

The listed Hofferhof 68 ensemble is a former courtyard. Its core is a two-story half-timbered house with a half- hipped roof that stands on a massive rubble stone base. On the north side of the eaves there is a two-story extension with half-timbered structures on a solid, plastered ground floor. On the gable side, the colored coat of arms of the Müllenbach family can be seen in a profiled plaster frame. There is a historicizing front door on the eaves side. The windows have no bars, but have shutters . A weather vane is attached to the roof showing the coat of arms of the von Loë zu Stade family. The former farm buildings have been rebuilt and modernized.

history

In 1717, when the Hofferhof at that time went to the sisters Maria Petronella and Anna Clara von Loë due to an inheritance division, it consisted only of a residential house, which no longer exists today. 24 years later, Anna Clara von Loë bequeathed her shares to her godchild Anna Katharina Lemmer, who moved into the farm with her husband Bertram Müllenbach in 1759, which marked the beginning of the Müllenbach family, who are still living in the district. This was followed by the construction of further residential houses, including the also listed building Hofferhof 62 in 1802. In 1837/38 there was another division of the estate: one branch received the agricultural property Hofferhof 62, the other branch the property Hofferhof 68. Here it became 1880 by Ewald Müllenbach, originally as an agricultural sideline, the "Hoffer Alter" grain distillery, which is still active today, built.

The foundation stone for the distillery was laid in what was then the stable building. Originally, it was mainly about the production of stillage to produce concentrated feed for cows and oxen - alcohol was initially considered a by-product. Due to the increasing popularity of the grain brandy , however, a change began and the distillery moved to the fore. In 1911 Walter Müllenbach took over the farm and the distillery from his father, but had to hand over the copper devices to the distillery during the First World War , which were melted down to produce cannons.

On February 14, 1929, one of the coldest days of winter, a fire broke out for unknown reasons and devastated the agricultural part of the building, especially the stables. The snowy and icy location made it difficult for the fire brigade teams from Hoffnungsthal, Rösrath, Forsbach and Cologne to reach the Hofferhof district. For example, direct access was not possible and the fire brigade had to relocate their ladders on the last, steep bend in front of Hofferhof. When the water supply ran out or was simply frozen due to the cold, liquid manure had to be used to save the house and distillery. As a result of this measure, only one apartment on the upper floor fell victim to the flames. The fire brigade then had to keep a fire watch for a few more days because the stored hay continued to smolder.

From 1937, due to a general ban on distilling grain, until 1948 the distillery came to a complete standstill. With Eugen Müllenbach, a grandson took over the business and from then on concentrated fully on the distillery operation, the volume of which he increased twelve-fold by purchasing additional distillery rights. The agriculture was leased. On January 1st, 1980, the third generation change took place in Ralf Müllenbach, the great-grandson of the founder. He was followed in 2010 in the fifth generation by Tino Müllenbach.

Monument protection

The house Hofferhof 68 was included in the list of architectural monuments in Rösrath as monument no. 60 .

reception

Due to the ensemble with the other listed buildings Hofferhof 62 and 65–67, the city of Rösrath recommends a visit to the district Hofferhof and the distillery in an official brochure. The ensemble was also presented to the public in June 2015 as “Monument of the Month”. The selection for the “Monument of the Month” is made by a committee, which u. a. Representatives of the city of Rösrath, the city council and the history society Rösrath belong to.

Due to the "Hoffer Alter" grain distillery, the Hofferhof 68 building is the subject of both tips in the regional press (including Rheinische Post or Kölnische Rundschau ) and portraits, for example in 2017 in the magazine of the Rheinisch-Bergische Wirtschaftsförderungsgesellschaft, and in 2016 in a publication by the Chamber of Agriculture North Rhine-Westphalia about the "real country experiences in NRW" or in 2015 in a so-called industry portrait in the Bergisch Gladbach city magazine "GL Kompakt".

Trivia
