Vinasse residues referred to a fermentation liquor from carbohydrates (sugars) which, after the distilling off of the alcohol remain.

It contains all substances that were added to the mash ( proteins , fats and minerals ). The exact composition depends on the raw materials used. On the other hand, the carbohydrates that were converted into alcohol are no longer available . Stillage is dried or used in liquid form as fertilizer , in biogas plants or as animal feed .

The dried stillage from grain mash is also called DDGS ( Dried Distillers Grains with Solubles ). This term comes from whiskey production and means something like "dried distiller grain with a soluble portion". The remaining liquid is the thin stillage.

The largest producer of DDGS in Germany in 2006 was CropEnergies AG at the Zeitz location with a mass of approx. 260,000 t.
