Graciela Iturbide (born May 16, 1942 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican photographer . The focus of her work is the everyday life of various communities in Mexico.

Life

Graciela Iturbide was born the eldest of three children to a wealthy family. She received her education in Catholic boarding schools.

In 1969 she began studying at the national film school in Mexico, the Centro de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC). In 1970 she became the assistant to the photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo . After the sudden death of her six-year-old daughter in the same year, her life changed radically - she made photography her profession. In 1974 she documented General Omar Torrijos ' attempt to build a left regime in Panama . In 1979 she was invited to Juchitán by the painter Francisco Toledo to take part in an exhibition on the culture of the Zapotecs . In 1981 she published her photo report Los que viven en la arena (Eng. They live in the sand ) about the Seri Indians in the Sonoran Desert . In 2006 she was able to take photos in Frida Kahlo's house . Iturbide photographed "depressing stagings as well as self-stagings with Kahlo's personal items".

One of her most famous pictures is Our Lady of the Iguanas , which was created in 1979 in Juchitán, Oaxaca. It shows a woman wearing iguanas as a headdress.

She has been married to the architect Manuel Rocha since 1962. Two sons and a daughter were born from the marriage.
