history

The city of Megen was first mentioned in documents as Meginum in 721 . A certain Alard is attested as Count von Megen in 1145. After the Peace of Munster (1648) there were disputes between Albert Franz von Croÿ and the Dutch States General , but in 1671 the Dutch Republic had to recognize the independence of the county.

Megen came to Alexander II von Velen in 1666 , to Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz in 1697 and to the Schall von Bell family in 1728 . Karl Schall von Bell lost the county to France in 1794 . In 1800 it was sold to the Batavian Republic for one million francs . From 1810 there was a municipality of Megen, Haren and Macharen , which was incorporated into the municipality of Oss in 1994 .
