Graphic filter
Under graphics filters are understood functions in a graphics software , such as an image processing program that an existing, digital image (usually raster graphics ) with a preprogrammed algorithm , which often is configurable in some parameters, specifically change. The term is based on filters in photography , such as color filters or effect filters .
Sometimes a distinction is made between “filters” and “effects”, but the meaning of the two terms is not clearly delimited. Each filter or effect creates a specific effect.
Filters in image editing programs
Common filters and effects include:
- Creation of frames, flashes, textures, patterns, gradients, etc.
- Art filters: simulation of oil painting, fresco, pastel, etc.
- Distortion filter : generation of distortions of all kinds, e.g. B. swirls or waves.
- Sharpness filter , e.g. B. blur , unsharp masking
- Filters for creating digital watermarks such as B. Digimarc.
Often you have the opportunity to see a preview image of the effect before actually applying the effect.
Plugins: additional filters
Image editing programs usually already offer numerous filters and effects by default, but their functionality can be expanded considerably via a plug-in interface for filters and effects. Usually this can be found in a program folder with the name "Plugin" or "Additional modules". These modules (8bf files) are then installed there and can finally be called up in the program menu after restarting the program. Such a program folder can be found in every powerful image editing or vector graphics program.
