Reserva

Reserva describes a Spanish red wine (→ viticulture in Spain ) that has matured for at least one year in oak barrels and a total of at least three years in barrel and bottle. The wine can only be delivered in the fourth year after the harvest.

Gran Reserva is a Spanish red wine that has matured for at least two years in oak barrels and a total of at least five years in barrel and bottle. The wine can only be put on the market after five years. White wines must be stored in casks for six months and a total of two years. Only wines from good vintages may be used.

Wines from the Rioja and the Ribera del Duero are particularly suitable for this so-called barrique development, which is also used in many other Spanish growing areas.

Other labels for Spanish wine are Vino joven and Crianza .

Reserva and Gran Reserva are also used as quality marks for Spanish brandy , based on the storage time after distillation.

In Italy (→ Viticulture in Italy ) there is a similar quality designation: Riserva .
