The Grand Gascon Saintongeois is a French breed recognized by the FCI ( FCI Group 6, Section 1.1, Standard No. 21 ).
Breed history
The Grand Gascon Saintongeois was created in the mid-19th century when trying to breed the Chien de Saintonge . This breed was then in decline and can hardly be found. The initiator was Count Joseph de Carayon-Latour - mayor of Virelade at the time - who crossed the Grand Bleu de Gascogne (a pack of Baron de Ruble) with remnants of the stock and at the same time caused the decline of the Chien de Saintonge breed .
