The Grand Gulf State Park consists of a canyon with a partially collapsed cave system, a rock bridge and a river with sinkholes . The 134 hectare state park is located at a height of 217 m about 10 km west of Thayer in Oregon County of the US state Missouri .
The limestone and dolomite rock of the old river cave system collapsed over 10,000 years ago over a length of over a kilometer and forms a narrow gorge 40 m deep . The catchment area of the Grand Gulf is 51 km² and in the event of heavy rainfall the water level in the gorge can rise up to 30 m and only return to normal after a few weeks. In the gorge, the water flows partly underground and forms a natural rock bridge that spans 61 m. Coloring tests have shown that a large part of the water that disappears in the canyon and the karst caves in sinkholes emerges again after 15 km southeast in the Mammoth Spring spring pot of the Mammoth Spring State Park and can be detected there.
In 1971 the area was designated a National Natural Landmark and in 1984 the state park was established. Hiking trails lead over the rock bridge and through forests along the edges of the gorge. A wooden viewing platform provides an overview of the gorge and a wooden staircase on the steep walls provides access to the bottom of the gorge. There are no overnight accommodations in the park area.
