Grand Hotel Kronenhof
The Grand Hotel Kronenhof is a historic grand hotel from the Belle Epoque in Pontresina in the Upper Engadine , Switzerland . The hotel was owned by the founding Gredig family for over 140 years. It is located in the Laret part of the village, right next to the Evangelical Church of San Niculò and is included in the list of cultural assets of national importance in the canton of Graubünden .
history
In 1848 Andreas Gredig (1806–1877) bought the Rössli inn for his son Lorenz Gredig (1829–1905). In addition to the inn, he also ran a wine shop. With additions and also with the inclusion of existing outbuildings, Lorenz Gredig steadily enlarged his inn and turned it into a hotel. He called this first "Gasthaus zur Krone-Post" and later "Krone". Between 1896 and 1898, the architects Jacob and Georg Ragaz expanded the hotel into a representative, horseshoe-shaped three-wing complex with a courtyard of honor (French: Cour d'honneur ), surmounted by a crowned dome, which is still the main entrance of the hotel and which is in neo-baroque style designed light-flooded entrance hall houses. The name of the hotel has now been changed to "Grand Hotel Kronenhof und Bellavista", from which the current name "Grand Hotel Kronenhof" was derived later. The outbreak of the First World War in 1914 put an abrupt end to further expansion plans. The years of war and crisis put a strain on the “Grand Hotel Kronenhof” in terms of its profitability. However, the wine shop and agriculture, which continued to operate, ensured the survival of the hotel during these years.
In 1989, the heirs of the founding Gredig family sold their Grand Hotel to two Swiss private investors. They sold it in 2004 to the “Grand Hotels Engadinerkulm” stock corporation, which is also the owner of the historic “Hotel Kulm” in St. Moritz . In 2004, extensive restoration work began. The hotel is largely in its original state from the Belle Epoque, both inside and out.
