San Niculò (Pontresina)
San Niculò ( Romansh in the idiom turkey , German Saint Nicholas ) is the Evangelical - Reformed village church in Pontresina in the Upper Engadine . The building is a cantonal monument.
History and equipment
The church was built in Baroque style in 1640, towards the end of the Thirty Years War and after the end of the turmoil in Graubünden . It is located on Via Maistra at the southern exit of the old Laret district and largely determines the village image.
The tower adjoining the church building today used to stand on the west wall of the church on Via Maistra. In 1887 the architect Jakob Ragaz moved the tower in its old form to its current location. So he got the octagonal top and the old onion hood from 1720. His weather vane says 1887 as the year of the relocation.
The church is - in contrast to the famous Sta. Maria , which belongs to the political municipality of Pontresina - owned by the parish. The church can accommodate more than 300 people and is a frequent venue for concerts because of its acoustics. In the Upper Engadine, shortly after its completion, San Niculò served as a model for the Bel Taimpel church in Celerina .
Church organization
Within the Evangelical Reformed Regional Church of Graubünden , Pontresina has been part of the Upper Engadin refurmo parish since January 1, 2017 and with this part of the Colloquium VII Engiadin'Ota - Bregaglia - Poschiavo - Sursès . Until 2017, Pontresina was affiliated to the Upper Engadine parish association Il Binsaun , the forerunner of today's merged parish .
