Sta. Maria (Pontresina)
The church of Sta. Maria stands above Pontresina in the Upper Engadine near the Spaniola castle tower .

The church belongs to the political municipality of Pontresina and is used for abdications and weddings.
Interior
Sta. Maria for the frescoes from the 12th and 15th centuries that decorate all four church walls. In the choir, Jesus Christ is depicted as a pantocrator , his hand raised in a greeting of peace .
history
Sta. In the Upper Engadine, Maria was the church of the parish in which the Reformation first took hold. Since 1640 the Church of San Niculò has been the parish church of the municipality . It is one of the churches that flank the mule track from the Rhine Valley to Italy ( Po Valley ), as well as z. B. San Romerio near Brusio , San Pietro near Poschiavo or Santa Perpetua in Tirano .
graveyard
The church is surrounded by the village cemetery, which has been expanded several times. Around the church are the graves of mountain guides, including that of the hunter and mountain guide Gian Marchet Colani . The graves of the Pontresin hotelier families such as Enderlin, Gredig, Klainguti, Saratz ( Gian Saratz ), Stiffler or Stoppany are often elaborately designed .
