The Roman Catholic Church of San Spiert (Holy Spirit Church) is located in the district of San Spiert in Pontresina in the Upper Engadin in the Diocese of Chur . The church is set back from the Via Maistra (main street) and is consecrated to the Holy Spirit .

history

Christianity is said to have come from northern Italy to the Engadine in the 10th century . In the historic part of the village of San Spiert there has been a San Spiert chapel since 1485, which the Tempesta family had built from their own fortune in honor of the Holy Spirit with the permission of the bishop. However, this chapel has gone off. In 1941 the remains of the former Roman Catholic chapel were found in the basement of the Aebli house. On the facade of the house, a Latin inscription in 1485 reminds me of Priest Johannes Tempesta Maurici from Pontresina ... in honor of the Holy Spirit of the former San Spiert Chapel. The Reformation was introduced in Pontresina in 1549.

From 1891, Roman Catholic services were again celebrated in Pontresina, and since 1893 a regular Roman Catholic service has been held from St. Moritz in the parish hall of the Pontresina schoolhouse. From 1908, Roman Catholic religious instruction took place in Pontresina again.

Today's Catholic Church of San Spiert was built in 1923 near the former, abandoned San Spiert chapel. In January 1923, the building complex of the Restaurant-Casino Tais, consisting of a restaurant, casino room and a stable built below, was bought for 115,000 francs and a small chapel was set up in the room. The hall was then converted into a church with 100 seats and consecrated on July 15, 1927. The restaurant was converted into a rectory and a quasi-Romanesque tower was added between the rectory and the church. In 1930 a small parish library was opened and in 1944 the parish hall under the church was consecrated.

In July 1955, a new extension was started. The nave was lengthened by a large choir and a side chapel (Brother Klaus Chapel) was added to the right and a sacristy to the left. As a result, the capacity of the church could be expanded from 100 seats to 200 to 230 seats today. The consecration of this conversion took place on November 30, 1956 by Bishop Christianus Caminada of Chur . In 1973 the interior was last rebuilt and the large organ was installed in the choir room.

Tower and bells

Distinctive sound openings in the tower
Church bells

The tower of the Church of San Spiert is surrounded on three sides by building walls and has a rectangular floor plan. To the right of the tower is the main entrance to the church. A gable roof is placed on the tower, which is surmounted by a simple cross.

A distinctive feature of the tower are the four large sound openings, two of which are isosceles trapezoidal sound openings, with the base of the trapezoid being at the top. The wooden construction of the sound openings themselves form a cross, whereby this impression is reinforced with the trapezoidal sound openings with the connection of the wooden construction with the roof structure of the tower.

The tower was erected during the second construction phase (renovation), in 1927. A small bell weighing 150 kilograms from 1597 was raised and was given to the church. The bell has the inscription: cast in Como . In 1957 three large bells were raised, which are still in the tower today. These bells were also a gift, donated by the US-American Elisabeth Bird from New York . The three bells were cast in the Rüetschi bell foundry in Aarau in May 1957 and the bells were consecrated on June 2, 1957.

  • The largest bell with a weight of 700 kilograms and a diameter of 1.07 meters is dedicated to the church patron, the Holy Spirit and bears the inscription: Veni Sancte Spiritus, Consolator Optime ( Come, Holy Spirit, best comforter ). This is tuned to tone g .
  • the middle bell, weighing 420 kilograms and 0.89 meters in diameter, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and bears the inscription: Virgo Spiritu Sancto obumbrata, ora pro nobis ( Virgin, shadowed by the Holy Spirit, pray for us ). This is tuned to the pitch b .
  • the third bell with a weight of 300 kilograms and a diameter of 0.8 meters is dedicated to the Swiss national saint and patron of the chapel, Nikolaus von Flüe and bears the inscription: Sancte Nicolae de Flue roga, ut praemium nobis ultimum sit Spiritus Sanctus (“ Saint Nikolaus von Flüe, ask that the Holy Spirit be our highest reward ” ). This is tuned to the tone c ″ .
  • A bell weighing 150 kilograms (diameter 0.53 meters) serves as the christening bell. This is tuned to the tone g ″ .

window

The eight glass windows were designed in 1972 by Enrico Leoni Donati from Zurich and made by the Alfred Soratroi art glass factory in Zurich.

  • Back window (next to the confessional, left side wall of the parish church): Depiction of the forgiveness of Jesus on the hill of Golgotha. The right cross is anchored in the cross of Christ and symbolizes the forgiveness of Jesus Christ.
  • Middle window (left side wall of the parish church): Representation of the sacrament of baptism, water and the world (day and night). The new birth takes place through baptism (the way to divine life).
  • Front window (left side wall of the parish church): Depiction of the Last Supper with bread and wine in the center. Premonition and celebration of the sacrificial death of Jesus.
  • Small window above the entrance to the sacristy (left side wall of the parish church): Depiction of the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is said to have taken on the suffering of the world with his cross.
  • Back window (right side wall of the parish church): Representation of the Holy Spirit. The flickering flame and the dissolved cross are supposed to represent the symbolism of the divine light. The flame represents the spiritual power.
  • Middle window (right side wall of the parish church): Representation of the way to the light of God and to infinity. The way leads beyond the cross.
  • Front window (right side wall of the parish church): Depiction of the earthly cross. Everyone carries their own cross. Brown as an earthly color symbolizes human life. The way to God should take place through the encounter with Jesus Christ.
  • Small window above the sliding door to the chapel (right side wall of the parish church): Depiction of the bridge as a connection between people and as a way to the Christian community.

organ

The organ installed in 1972 was built by August Späth ( Freiburg im Breisgau ) and placed in the choir due to the lack of space in the nave . The organ has eleven registers and 731 pipes and was inaugurated on January 21, 1973.
