Jakob Ragaz came from a family of craftsmen from Tamins. He attended the canton school in Chur and then studied at the polytechnic schools in Stuttgart and Munich . The newly qualified architect received his first contract in the Engadin in 1866 , where his father Linhard Ragaz had worked as a carpenter in the 1840s. In Samedan he took over the construction management for the Hotel Bernina , which the Zurich architect Johann Jakob Breitinger had designed.

The good construction activity in the Engadine - the emerging tourism promised many construction contracts - prompted him to settle in Samedan. Together with his brother Georg (born October 16, 1857 in Tamins; † January 12, 1909 in Chur) he founded the Ragaz brothers' building business there . In the company, Georg, as a carpenter, was more likely to take on the practical work such as building construction, while the architect Jakob took care of the design tasks.

With their late classicist hotel and villa buildings such as the Saratz , Pontresina (today Sporthotel Pontresina ), Languard and Enderlin as well as the Ludwig and Gredig villas , they significantly shaped the change in the appearance of Pontresina from a village to a tourist resort between 1870 and 1890. From the 1890s onwards, they expanded most of these hotels - the aim was to catch up with the competition in nearby St. Moritz and to satisfy the increasing demands of guests - in neo-baroque and neo-renaissance forms . The expansion of the Hotel Kronenhof and Bellavista from 1896 to 1898 into today's three-wing complex is particularly important .

After Georg's death in 1909, the Koch, Vonesch & Co. company in Samedan took over the construction business in 1912 . Jakob Ragaz returned to Tamins, where he died in 1922.

The State Archives of the Canton of Graubünden in Chur keep his estate .
