The Grand Hôtel Wiesler in Graz is an Art Nouveau hotel built at the beginning of the 20th century . It is located on the right bank of the Mur, Grieskai 4–8, in the immediate vicinity of the sights of Kunsthaus Graz , Grazer Murinsel , Grazer Schloßberg and the main square . Together with the Hotel "Das Weitzer" and the "Hotel Daniel Graz", the Grand Hôtel Wiesler is one of the three Weitzer Hotels located in Graz. Two other Weitzer hotels are located in Vienna. On the ground floor of the Grand Hôtel Wiesler is the restaurant called "Salon Marie", which also belongs to the company. The hotel owner is Florian Weitzer, who has been running the hotel in the fourth generation since 2003.

history

The current Grand Hôtel Wiesler is an Art Nouveau building that was gradually built from 1894. The history of the location goes back to the 17th century. As early as 1637, the inn "Zum Roten Igel" can be found at this point in the Mur suburb. It was located at the then only toll bridge in the city over the Mur. In the 18th century the house was called "Goldener Engel am Gries". In 1871 the inn was acquired by the landlord Carl Wiesler, who at that time already owned two restaurants in Graz. The house was now called "Hotel zum Goldenen Engel". In 1887, Wiesler's widow, Maria, bought the house at today's Grieskai 4. Her son, Anton Wiesler, acquired the neighboring house at Grieskai 6 in 1897. A new large hotel in the then current style of the Vienna Secession was then gradually built on the merged property . In 1898 the special extras of the Hotel "Goldener Engel" such as lift, bathrooms and central heating were advertised.

Before the house finally opened as the Grand Hôtel Wiesler in 1909 , the extension at Grieskai 8 was built from 1902 onwards during the renovation phase according to plans by the architect and painter Marcel Kammerer (1878–1959), who was Otto Wagner's chief draftsman at the time. The Grand Salon located in it is still remarkable today, with one of the most beautiful and largest glass mosaics of Art Nouveau: “Spring” from the workshop of Leopold Forster , a student of Koloman Moser and co-founder of the Vienna Secession and Wiener Werkstätte .

In the years 1945–1954 the house functioned as a British officers' hotel. In 1986 the house was reopened as a 5-star hotel after a stylish renovation. As a result, guests such as Willy Brandt , Mick Jagger , Joe Cocker , Deep Purple , Falco , Arnold Schwarzenegger and numerous other celebrities stayed at the Grand Hotel Wiesler. In 1999 the hotel came into the possession of the Weitzer family, and in 2003 Florian Weitzer took over management of the Weitzer Hotels from his father, Hans Helmut Weitzer.

Until 2010, the Grand Hôtel Wiesler was the only five-star hotel in the Styrian capital. In May 2010 the house was repositioned and continued as "Hotel Wiesler" without star rating. Since 2019 the house has been called the Grand Hôtel Wiesler again. In four construction periods between 2011 and 2018, all 102 rooms were successively redesigned. In 2019, the lobby and the restaurant "Speisesaal" were converted, which was officially reopened on October 17, 2019 as "Salon Marie".
