The Grazer Murinsel or, according to the project, The Insel in der Mur is a floating platform that was planned from 1999, built in 2002 and opened in January 2003 in the Mur in the middle of Graz , to be part of the cultural capital year ( Graz 2003 ) next to the Schlossberg to create a second and modern landmark for the city. The aim of the project operator was to combine architecture and art in public spaces with the experience of water in the center of the city.

Origin, use

Based on an idea by the Grazer Robert Punkenhofer, founder and director of Art & Idea , the New York artist and designer Vito Acconci created a spectacular object: a 50 m long and 20 m wide shell shape that houses an open-air theater and a rounded "cathedral" (such as the artist calls him). The artificial landscape, created from the combination of the forms “dome” and “shell”, is designed for around 350 visitors. In the "Dom" there is a café ( island café ) and a children's playground.

The "island" is upstream of the Edegger -steg , a little north of the main bridge, between the Schlossberg and the Kunsthaus . It can be reached from both banks of the Mur via a footbridge.

With regard to the future or indirect usability and usability of the artifact, according to the audit report of the City Audit Office of Graz, regarding the annual financial statements for the year 2008 of Graz 2003 - European Capital of Culture Organizations GmbH , a normal useful life of 25 years was assumed for the Murinsel . The first water law notification to operate the Murinsel in Graz was limited to 23 December 2012. - With regard to any unfavorable notification of the water law, the review judgment - despite the apparent gap between the duration of the usage permit under water law and the book-based usage period - assumed that the Murinsel would also have a positive market value at the time of the expiry of the water law permit, especially since it is degradable and transportable , thus would be salable . It was noted that a corresponding provision would have been made for the demolition costs. In 2011 it was reported that 821,000 euros had been reserved for possible disposal.

In 2013, the federal government issued a permit under water and shipping law for a further ten years. In 2013 a decision was to be made in cooperation with Vito Acconci as to the technical and architectural form in which a sun sail would be installed over the artifact. This shading device is intended to facilitate events in the uncovered open-air area of the Murinsel.

Another planning project concerns the flow behavior of the Mur: on the north side of the platform, the ramming protection against floating debris is to be reinforced. The flood of July 21, 2012 (highest level: 6.4 m) led to the Murinsel being closed for days. If the island remained stable in its anchorage, however, tree trunks up to ten meters long struck the hull of the platform during temporary locks , into which water could penetrate.
