Grand-Popo is a city with 40,335 inhabitants (2002) in the southwest of Benin . The city is located in the center of an approximately 21 km long and only one kilometer wide corner of Benin, which runs along the coast towards Togo. The hinterland of Grand-Popo is therefore in Togo.
It is located in the Mono department on the Atlantic coast and on the border with Togo .
The originally Portuguese trading base served the slave trade for a long time and experienced the French colonial era ( French West Africa ) from 1899 to 1960 .
Despite the progressive coastal erosion of the wide sandy beaches, which has already led to major erosion of older districts, the city is growing. In addition to fishing, a source of income is tourism, for example from Cotonou and the Togolese Lomé .
The pop group Grand Popo Football Club became known beyond the city .
Robert Sastre (1926–2000), Bishop of Lokossa, was born in Grand-Popo.
