The Grand Temple de Lyon is a Protestant church on the banks of the Rhone , in the 3rd arrondissement of Lyon . It is owned by the Reformed Church of Lyon and has been a classified monument ( Monument historique classé ) since July 28, 2011 . The parish belongs to the United Protestant Church of France .

history

The church was constructed in 1884 by the Protestant architect Gaspard André (1840-1896). The inauguration service took place on May 1, 1884.

The complete renovation work started in 2010 was successfully completed at the end of 2012. The cost of the project amounted to 3 million euros, of which 2.2 million euros was financed from public funds and the rest from donations.

People's library

In addition to the hall for worship with around 900 seats, the building also contains a Protestant public library . The library was established in the Temple du Change on April 1, 1830 , and moved to the Grand Temple in 1889. It could not keep up with the many city libraries in the area for long, so that it stopped making new purchases in 1926 and finally closed in 1930. The extraordinary thing about it is that it is still in its original state. It contains about 4,500 books on history, philosophy, theology, travelogues and many novels for children and adults, collections of folk songs and magazines.

organ

Organ in the Grand Temple

The organ comes from the organ builder Joseph Merklin (1819–1905). Its first owner Albert Périlhou inaugurated it on May 26, 1884. The instrument is historically significant as it was Joseph Merklin's first organ to be equipped with an electro-pneumatic action . The organ was destroyed by fire in 1922, in the following years it was rebuilt by Michel, Merklin & Kuhn and given a mechanical-pneumatic action. In the 1960s, the organ builder Dunand made some adjustments. The organ builder Promonet equipped it with a second movable digital console during a restoration carried out in 2002.
