Ash (n) space , even slag place , Tenne Place , Grand Place , and sometimes hard court (to be confused with not hard court or hard court in tennis, where it refers to a place with plastic covering), a collective term for is sports fields with a stony granular surface (similar to the clay court in tennis ), which in the past mostly consisted of volcanic ash or slag . On the other hand, there are course surfaces made of natural turf or plastic, in particular increasingly artificial turf .

Explanations of terms, technical requirements and care instructions are included in DIN 18035-5 (sports fields, tennis courts).

advantages

The advantages compared to natural grass are a lower purchase price, lower maintenance requirements (and thus lower maintenance costs), greater resilience and playability even in bad weather . Problems with molehills almost never occur.

disadvantage

The ball bouncing and rolling behavior is far from that of natural turf because of the harder surface. In addition, the small-grain coating often leads to problems with the drainage system , which often tends to become blocked. In dry weather the surface can be very dusty.

Hard courts are often criticized because of the increased risk of injury ( abrasions , bruises ). Abrasions are usually difficult to clean because the fine components of the plaque settle in the wound; Any dirt remaining in the wound increases the risk of infection and causes scars (“ dirty tattoo ”).

In the past, the surface of the ash pit had to be replaced in many cases because of the proven pollution.
