Life

Gerarda Hermina Marius was the daughter of Johanna Hofker (1817–1856) and the Hengelo doctor Christiaan Gerhard Frederik Marius (1810–1867). At a young age she received painting and drawing lessons from Jan Striening (1827–1903) in Deventer and was August Allebé's student at the Amsterdam Art Academy from 1880 . Since 1883 she settled in The Hague as a painter

Since 1891 she has been writing about contemporary artists and museums in The Hague for various Dutch magazines and newspapers - such as De Nederlandsche Spectator, De Gids , De Nieuwe Gids , De Kroniek, Elseviers Illustrated Monthly Magazine and Our Art in Words and Pictures . She also wrote art reviews for Het Nieuws van de Dag and Het Vaderland .

She wrote about John Ruskin , Vincent van Gogh and in 1903 she published her most important work, an extensive treatise on De Hollandsche schilderkunst in de negentiende eeuw (Dutch painting in the 19th century ). which also appeared in German (1906) and in English (1908).

Marius published numerous other books on art, including a children's book on Rembrandt . She gave up painting because she could make a living from writing.

She was still preparing a second edition of her main work, but died before completion - the foreword to the second edition of De Hollandsche schilderkunst in de negentiende eeuw 1920 contains her obituary. The English version was reissued in 1973.
