Grattenauer (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Grattenauer (Variations: Krattenauer, von Krottnaurer, Gratenau) is the name of an old and single line ennobled German family of scholars, whose origins lie in the 17th century and which produced numerous personalities, especially in the field of Protestant theology and law .

The Hungarian origin

The oldest proven bearer of the name is Friedrich Grattenauer, governor of Count Batthyány in Pinkafeld . His son David Friedrich, a merchant in St. Gotthard, was raised to the hereditary Hungarian nobility on November 10, 1660 by Emperor Leopold I under the name of Krottnaurer.

The progenitor of the German lines

David Friedrich's son Christoph Friedrich Grattenauer (born November 19, 1650 in St. Gotthard , † September 16, 1706 in Stendal ) fled to Saxony as a result of the Counter-Reformation actively pursued by Leopold I , where he studied theology in Leipzig from 1675 . He did not have the Hungarian title of nobility, as it was not valid in the German Empire . However, in the second half of the 18th century a line of his descendants had the name of Krottnaurer recognized in Prussia . From 1680 Grattenauer worked at Stendal Cathedral , which also houses his epitaph . His first marriage was to a Berlin family and his second marriage to a Stendal patrician family .

coat of arms

The coat of arms, awarded in 1660, is described in the nobility diploma as follows: "An upright war shield of sky-blue color on a green, widespread field, on which a farmer in red dress, with sea-colored breeches and yellow half-leather boots, with a sea-colored belt, his head with a red one , covered with rolled-up hat, in a progressing position he can be seen resting his left hand on his loins, but holding a full bunch of grapes in his right hand and turning to the right side of the shield. Above the shield is a scratched or open war helmet with the From it protrudes above the knees another man, similar to the lower one, who likewise rests his left hand on the loin, but with the right shows a lute or harp and is adorned with what is stated, while from the tip or the cone of the helmet here yellow and sea-colored, there white and red borders and ribbons up to the edges spread it and decorate the sign itself tastefully.
