The gray bud weevil ( Peritelus sphaeroides ) is a beetle from the family of weevils and the subfamily Entiminae .

features

The beetles are 5–8 mm long. They are oval in shape and have a beige-light brown color. The pronotum is a quarter wider than it is long. Their top is densely covered with round and short oval scales. The femora are unculled and, in contrast to many members of the genus Otiorhynchus, not toothed.

distribution

The species occurs in western Europe. Their distribution area extends from the Iberian Peninsula via France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria to Germany. In Central Europe, the beetles are mainly found in the warmer regions (on the Upper and Middle Rhine ). The species is also represented in England.

Way of life

The beetles can be seen from April to June. They live polyphagous on various shrubs and herbaceous plants. When they occur in large numbers, the beetles can cause considerable damage to stone fruit , especially young plants and especially peach trees . In doing so, they damage the plants by eating their leaves.
