Johannes Herbrich

Johannes Herbrich , also Johannes Herberich (* before 1571 in Lauda ; † May 9, 1607 ) was a German Premonstratensian Abbot and from 1571 to 1607 Abbot of the Premonstratensian Monastery of Oberzell in Zell am Main .

Oberzell before Herbrich

Oberzell Abbey was threatened by the advance of the Reformation in the 16th century . The monastery villages were not strongly influenced by Luther's actual ideas, but the subsequent German Peasants' War severely affected the abbey. The subsequent abbots tried to restore the destroyed monastery buildings in the following years. At the same time they promoted the sciences in the monastery, here Abbot Thomas Neidlein made a particular difference .

Life

Johannes Herbrich was born in the Franconian city of Lauda in the 16th century. The place was part of the Hochstift Würzburg and was oriented towards the distant metropolis. Nothing is known about the family of the future abbot, and Herbrich's schooling is also in the dark. Presumably he joined the Premonstratensian order early and then attended the University of Würzburg to study theology.

After Herbrich's predecessor, Abbot Sebastian Stumpf , died in September 1571, a new election became necessary. Herbrich emerged as the winner. In Würzburg, Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn was elected as the new prince-bishop a short time later , who pushed the Counter-Reformation in his sphere of influence. The young bishop used visitors to check the monastic and parish discipline in the high estates.

The visit reports showed that the monastery parish of Hettstadt in particular needed reform. So Bishop Julius turned to Abbot Johannes, who was supposed to initiate the structural renovation of the parish church. However, Herbrich did not implement the requested renovations, so that in 1597 there was an open dispute with Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn. The prince-bishop now demanded the appointment of a secular priest . The dispute was still smoldering at the beginning of the 17th century and could not be resolved under Herbrich.

There were also other complaints after the visitations in the towns of Acholshausen , Gaukönigshofen and Wolkshausen , which also belonged to the area of the Oberzell Abbey. Again, Bishop Julius Echter admonished Abbot Johannes Herbrich. This time the abbot took the admonitions seriously and subsequently renewed the parishes. At the same time, a lot of building activity started on the area of the monastery itself. The choir of the old monastery church was demolished and rebuilt.

Johannes Herbrich also had the Marienkapelle near the monastery rebuilt in Zell. For this he called the master builder Georg Riemenschneider to the abbey. The renewal probably took place shortly after the abbot took office in the 1570s. Herbrich also succeeded in reducing the monastery debt and regaining estranged property during his long tenure . Abbot Johannes Herbrich died on May 9, 1607.
