The gray field herb owl ( Lacanobia (Lacanobia) w-latinum ), also known as the gorse owl , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family (Noctuidae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 36 to 41 millimeters. The forewings vary in several shades of color and contain red-brown, purple-brown, silver-gray and dark brown tints. Kidney and ring flaws are large and partly reddish in color. The basal line is very dark and noticeable. The middle field and the outermost edge area also stand out dark, while the inner edge area is colored gray-brown to silver-gray. This characteristic led to the German name Graufeld-Kräutereule and differentiates it from other species. In the light wavy line, a large W-sign reaching to the outer edge can be seen, which also served as the basis for the Latin name w-latinum . The hind wings are gray-brown without drawing, slightly darkened towards the outside, only the dark veins stand out more clearly.

Egg, caterpillar, pupa

The flat, hemispherical egg has little protruding, wavy ribs. It is initially yellowish green, later whitish or gray with carmine-red spots on the upper part. The color of the caterpillars varies from greenish or yellowish to brownish gray. They have an indistinct dark back line with also dark slashes. They also show light side stripes and legs as well as black stigmas . The head has two distinctive vertical black stripes. The dark red-brown doll has a small, shovel-shaped cremaster with two points, constricted at the base .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in Europe with an extension to Central Asia ( Turkmenistan ) and Asia Minor, in the mountains it rises to an altitude of about 1600 meters. The main habitat are warm slopes, mixed forests, bushy heathland areas and parklands.

Way of life

The moths are predominantly nocturnal, occasionally suckling on the flowers of barberry ( Berberis vulgaris ), appearing on artificial light sources and occasionally also on bait . The caterpillars live from July to September. They feed on the leaves of a wide variety of plants, such as blueberries ( Vaccinium myrtillus ), blackthorn ( Prunus spinosa ), various types of gorse ( Genista, Sarothamnus ), silver birch ( Betula pendula ) and others. The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The gray field herb owl is widespread in Germany and can be found in large numbers in some areas, so that it is not considered endangered.

Systematics

The genus Lacanobia is described by Hacker et al. (2002) divided into three sub-genera. Lacanobia w-latinum is part of the nominate subgenus Lacanobia .
