Great Haywood is a village in Staffordshire , England . It is located on the A51 highway a few kilometers northwest of Rugeley .

Local attractions include Shugborough Hall country house .

There are two churches with an attached school: St. Stephens Church, which was designed by Thomas Trubshaw and in whose attached cemetery the second, third and fourth Earl of Lichfield are buried, and St. John the Baptist's Catholic church, which was originally was built about 3 miles further in Tixall, but was dismantled after being sold to Earl Talbot and rebuilt in Great Haywood.

In January 1917, JRR Tolkien began writing his book The Book of the Missing Stories here after he left the British Army for health reasons.
