The Great Synagogue in Sydney , the capital of the Australian state of New South Wales , was built between 1875 and 1878. The synagogue at 187a Elizabeth Street is a listed building .

The synagogue in the style of Historicism , a mixture of Gothic and Byzantine style elements, was built according to plans by the architect Thomas Rowe . The inauguration took place on March 4, 1878. The structure for the Orthodox community was built from local sandstone .

The bima , which according to Orthodox tradition originally stood in the middle of the room, was moved in 1906 to create more seats. The women's galleries are on the long sides.
