Green, Green Grass of Home

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Green, Green Grass of Home is a country song written by Curly Putman and first published by Johnny Darrell in 1965 . That same year, Porter Wagoner hit No. 4 on the country charts, and the recording of Bobby Bare also became popular.

Tom Jones made the piece known worldwide in 1966, took first place in the British singles charts and also hit the charts in numerous other countries. There are numerous cover versions of the song; a German version with the title The way back home was recorded in 1967 by Jürgen Herbst .

The song is about a man who visits his childhood home and meets his parents and friends. He then wakes up to find it is just a dream he had in prison one night. It is the day his execution is scheduled.

Chess player Bobby Fischer wanted the Tom Jones version of the song to be played at his funeral, which it did in 2008.
