Greenstream

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greenstream (literally for 'green electricity', notation by the operating company GreenStream ) is a pipeline that is largely under water. It transports natural gas from the Libyan city of Mellitah to the city of Gela in Sicily . Greensteam is part of the Western Libyan Gas Project and Libya's only export pipeline (as of 2008).

In February 2011, Green Stream was because of the civil war in Libya by Eni provisionally closed.

Construction and technical data

Greenstream was built by Agip , Eni and National Oil Corporation . The work lasted from August 2003 to February 2004. A total of around 6.6 billion US dollars was invested. The pipeline went into operation in October 2004.

The transport of the natural gas begins in the Gas Compression Station at Mellitah , a compression station with a maximum pressure of 212 bar . From there, the gas travels a distance of around 524 kilometers in a maximum water depth of 1,150 meters until it reaches the receiving terminal in Sicily .

Greensteam has a transport capacity of 8 billion cubic meters per year, the pipe diameter is 32 inches (81.28 centimeters). The potential transport capacity is to be expanded by 3 billion cubic meters / year by 2012 or 2013.

Due to the civil war in Libya and the ongoing shutdown of the pipeline, expansion in the coming years has become very unlikely.

Operating companies

Greenstream is operated by the GreenStream BV joint venture . Until April 2010, Eni held 75% of it, the NOC 25%. Since then, the shares of both companies have been 50% each.
