The inland waterway vessel Greenstream is an inland tanker that went into service in April 2012 and uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. It is considered to be the world's first inland tanker to be powered exclusively by natural gas . On September 3, 2013, the second ship of this series was named Green Rhine in Rotterdam, the name of the ship was named by Edwige Bellard, President of the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (CCNR).

Ship description

Rear view of the Greenstream

The inland tanker Greenstream is a 110 m long double-hull tanker , which is 11.4 m wide and has a draft of 3.45 m and can transport 2,870 t in six tanks. Since the hull is equipped with the so-called Ijsselhuid , a special side wall construction, the tanks are larger than the otherwise permitted 380 m³. The wheelhouse, adjustable in height, and the apartments are built on the foredeck. Four Scania gas engines with 300 kW each drive generators that generate the electricity for the traction motors of the two Veth Z-drives. Two generators are placed in two containers on deck behind the gas tanks. A Veth bow thruster is built into the bow. The LNG is stored at –162 ° C in double-walled, vacuum-insulated special tanks on the aft deck; the bunkering takes place in tank trucks.

The ship was in 2013 by the shipyard Peters Shipyards in Dutch Kampen delivered and travels on the Rhine with special permission of the Central Commission for Navigation on the Rhine (CCR).

Regulations

Since the current regulations for ships do not permit fuels with a flash point below 55 ° C, an exemption from the CCNR was required. This was granted after an extensive safety analysis by Lloyd's Register of Shipping . The previously missing regulations for LNG operation are to be passed by 2014 at the latest. [outdated]

Awards

On October 8, 2013, Peters Shipyard received the inland shipping innovation award for the ship concept. The Green Stream was on November 1, 2013 by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Vereniging van Technici op Scheepvaartgebied (KNVTS) with the price Ship of the Year 2013 award.
