Pedra do Ingá

The Pedra do Ingá ( German  "Stone of Ingá" ) is a rock formation with petroglyphs in the middle of the Ingá river .

description

The rock is located near the city of Ingá (Paraíba) in Brazil , about 96 km from João Pessoa , the capital of the state of Paraíba . It is an important archaeological site and one of the most interesting and enigmatic rocks in the world. The age cannot be determined using the radiocarbon method due to the lack of organic materials .

The rock formation takes up an area of about 250 m². On a 46 meter long and 3.8 meter high wall there are images of different figures, the meanings of which are still unknown today. It is reasonable to assume that u. a. are images of animals, fruits, people, constellations of stars like Orion or the Milky Way . Scientists suggest that the symbols and glyphs came from the locals who lived in the area until the 18th century.

Since 2015, the Pedra do Ingá has been a proposal for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage list on the tentative list of Brazil (Ref. 6000 ).

designation

The Ingá stone is also called Itacoatiara do Ingá . The word Itacoatiara means writing or picture on stone in the Tupí language of the indigenous people. Because there is still a group of smaller stones near the main formation, which have been processed in a corresponding way, the plural form Itacoatiaras do Ingá is also used, in English, stones from Ingá .
