Goalkeeping career

youth

Hawa began his long-term goalkeeping career at the age of nine with the East Berlin company sports association (BSG) EAB Lichtenberg 47 . At the age of 13, EAB delegated him to 1. FC Union Berlin in 1972, where he was initially active until 1984. In the 1976/77 season Hawa played with the Union Juniors in the GDR Junior League, then he was goalkeeper of the Unioners in the junior league. In the meantime he had completed his apprenticeship as a cable mechanic.

1. FC Union - Oberliga / DDR-Liga

For the 1979/80 season Hawa was accepted as the third goalkeeper behind Wolfgang Matthies and Bernd Wargos in the Union Oberliga team. Already on November 24, 1979 he came to his first league assignment. In the game 1. FC Magdeburg - 1. FC Union (5: 1) he was substituted on at 0: 4 after half-time for the unnerved Wargos. The previous number one in Union-Tor Matthies had meanwhile been drafted into military service. Hawa then had to wait until the end of the season before coach Heinz Werner gave him another chance in five league games. The season ended for 1. FC Union as relegated, and Union played in the GDR league for the next two seasons . Hawa only played twelve of the first team's competitive games during this period, and was not used at all in 1981/82. As the second goalkeeper of the league squad in 1982/83, he represented Matthies in only two point games this season. For the 1983/84 season, coach Harry Nippert nominated the 1.86 m tall Hawa for the first time as number one in the Union goal. Hawa was injured two days before the start of the season, so that he could only be used from matchday 5. The new coach Karl-Heinz Burwieck , who was appointed on the 7th matchday , also stuck to Hawa, who played all other point games until the winter break. In the second half of the season, Burwieck used Dahms again in all games. At the end of the season, Union had to relegate again. Under the new coach Karl Schäffner and next to new signing Ronny Teuber , Hawa had no chances in the following weeks.

Neubrandenburg, Ludwigsfelde, Eisenhüttenstadt

In November 1984 Hawa moved to the GDR league club Post Neubrandenburg , but could not assert himself there either. Without appearing once in the official line-up of the GDR league team of Neubrandenburg, he joined the GDR league competitor Motor Ludwigsfelde in 1988 . Although still registered for Ludwigsfelde in the summer of 1989, Hawa played for the new league club Stahl Eisenhüttenstadt on September 9th. There he finally made the breakthrough as a regular player at the age of 30 and made 18 league appearances for the steelworkers by the end of the season. However, when the former GDR national goalkeeper Bodo Rudwaleit moved to the now restructured Eisenhüttenstädter FC Stahl (EFC) in the 1990/91 season , Hawa had to resign again and was no longer used in the first team that season. After Rudwaleit left the EFC after a year, Hawa moved up to number one in goal and in this way came to two international competitive games. As the cup finalist of the previous season, the EFC had qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup 1991/92, as cup winner Hansa Rostock had also become champions. The EFC now played in the DFB's third-class Oberliga Nordost and had no chance against their opponent Galatasaray Istanbul with Hawa in goal with 1: 2 and 0: 3.

End of career

After the 1991/92 season, Hawa ended his career as a football player in the performance area. He returned to Berlin and joined the district league team VSG Altglienicke as a recreational footballer. In 1993 he helped out again in three games as a goalkeeper at 1. FC Union Berlin in the Berlin Paul Rusch Cup , increasing the number of his competitive games at Union to 32. In 1994, Hawa joined the Berlin regional division SV Lichtenberg 47 and played 1996 at the age of 37 at SV Empor Berlin, also in the regional league.
