Greg Street (game developer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Greg Street , also known by his pseudonym Ghostcrawler , is an American computer game designer who worked for Blizzard Entertainment as lead systems designer on the award-winning MMORPG World of Warcraft . Street was a marine biologist before moving into the computer game industry. He worked with Ensemble Studios on the real-time strategy game series Age of Empires , where he was known as Deathshrimp .

Life

Street graduated from McDaniel College in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Philosophy, where he later earned a PhD in Marine Science. Between 1996 and 1998, Street was a research assistant professor at the University of South Carolina . But after a few years, Street's interest in his previous work disappeared. He complained that the higher he rose in the hierarchy, the more time he had to spend writing applications for research grants, filling out papers and playing political games within the institute. Street felt like he was caught in the same work cycle.

Street therefore hired in 1998 at Ensemble Studios, the team behind the real-time strategy game series Age of Empires , who hired him despite a lack of experience in the games sector. With his application he had enclosed a scenario for Age of Empires he had created himself with the help of the included editor , which was later published with the add-on Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome . Street worked for Ensemble from Rise of Rome on all other series offshoots, first as scenario and map designer, then later as lead designer. After the release of Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties , Street left Ensemble.

In February 2008, Street was hired by Blizzard Entertainment as lead system designer of the MMORPG World of Warcraft . His work for Blizzard has a similar focus as during his work for Ensemble: “Game designers are not artists or programmers [ Note: these are the three main professions in game development ], but we use the tools that were developed by programmers and those developed by the artists created materials to bring content into play. Programmers make the game work, the artists make it beautiful, but it's the designer's job to turn it into a fun product. ”Street gained greater prominence during the public beta test for the add-on World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King when he did some of the communications with the beta testers on the World of Warcraft public forums.

In November 2013, Street left Blizzard after 5 years as lead system designer.

Nowadays, Street only communicates through his Twitter account @OccupyGStreet.

He worked on the League of Legends game until the end of 2019 .

Since the beginning of 2020 he has been the Vice President of Intellectual Property and Entertainment at Riot Games.
