Gregor Lechner (Abbot)

Gregor Lechner (* in Schärding ; † August 27, 1558 in Kremsmünster ) was a Benedictine and abbot of Kremsmünster Abbey .

Gregor Lechner was born in Schärding. Unanimously elected abbot of Kremsmünster by the convent in 1543 , he achieved great and lasting services during his tenure, which have shaped the monastery to this day.

So in 1546 he had the masonry moat built and surrounded the monastery with a strong wall, fortified with five towers. Six years later in 1552 he was in a nearby forest swamps dry up and create four ponds, which still exists today Schacher ponds .

In 1549 he opened the Latin school and today's Stiftsgymnasium Kremsmünster for the youth of the country . On May 17, 1553 he was awarded the dignity of an imperial council by the sovereign. From 1555 Abbot Lechner took part in the meetings of the estates in the Archduchy of Austria ob der Enns as a member of the prelate class.
