Gregorio Aznárez (also: Gregorio Aznáres ) is a town in Uruguay .

geography

It is located in the Maldonado department in sector 5 . Gregorio Aznárez is located in the southwestern part of the department near the border with Canelones . Not far to the west is the Arroyo Solís Grande . In the south is the Río de la Plata and the seaside resort of Solís .

history

Around 1895/1896, the Estación La Sierra was the first station on the local railway line, which at that time was the last station in the east of the country. After the Oriental sugar refinery, founded in 1891 by the immigrants Félix Giraud and Gregorio Aznárez , acquired 3,000 hectares of land in the area at the end of the 19th century, sugar beet cultivation began there at the turn of the century . After the settlement that began in 1902, the construction of a sugar factory was followed by first sugar production in the following year. In the first half of the second decade of the 20th century the place grew and both a school and a police station were built. By the mid-1920s, around one hundred tenants and their families had already settled in the vicinity. After two more schools were built in 1941, a church was also built in 1950. Six years later, the first junta local met. Gregorio Aznárez was granted pueblo status on September 22, 1959 by Law No. 12,630 ( Ley 12,630 ) . In 1971 the place got its own cemetery. From 1974 there was also a secondary private school ( Liceo ) on site.

Gregorio Aznárez is on Ruta 9 . The Montevideo - Punta del Este railway line also runs through the town.

Culture

The seat of the Club Rausa and the Museo Estación La Sierra are located in the village . The most important buildings in the area include La Sierra from 1895, the Rausa factory built in 1902 and the first railway line in the history of the department.

Gregorio Aznárez had 944 inhabitants at the 2011 census, of which 455 were men and 489 were women.
