pseudonym

In an interview with the Dutch Handelsblad on March 21, 2006 , Nekschot explained his pseudonym: With Gregorius he was referring to Pope Gregory IX. , who introduced the papal inquisition , and Nekschot , (German: shot in the neck ), is a method that fascists and communists used to get rid of unpleasant critics.

Nekschot was an acquaintance and employee of Theo van Gogh, who was shot in 2004 by a Muslim fundamentalist . His first caricatures critical of Islam appeared on his website. Nekschot's first publications were in Propria Cures , the oldest Dutch satirical student paper.

Today Nekschot mainly caricatures leftists and Muslims, but he has also depicted Queen Beatrix in compromising drawings, so that proceedings against him for insulting majesty are pending. Among other things, he works for the magazine HP / De Tijd . In 2005, a drawing became particularly well known in which an “ugly” Dutch woman lies in the middle of an idyllic Dutch landscape in front of a historic windmill, baring her genitals and giving birth to a “Muslim extremist”, a “bearded goblin with a machine gun at the ready”.

His caricatures have appeared in two volumes Misselijke grappen (German: Üble Jitze ) by Uitgeverij Xtra , the same publisher that published Theo van Gogh's Allah weet het beter (German: Allah knows better ). A review of the first volume of March 31, 2006, published in the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant , attested him to an “unnecessarily insulting” way of his 149 drawings contained therein, which were “gross insults”, “54 against Muslims, some against Christians , Jews, women and colored people ”.

Nekschot publishes many of his drawings on his website. The cartoons that led to his arrest have now been removed.

Shortly after Christmas 2011, Nekschot announced that he was going to quit , which Femke Halsema called a loss to the rule of law.

Preliminary investigation

Since 2005, Nekschot has been investigated in the Netherlands on suspicion of religious and racial abuse. According to the public prosecutor's office, in at least eight works he “discriminated against people of a different skin color or Islamic faith and incited social hatred”. On May 13, 2008, he was arrested and held for 30 hours. The arrest was based on a lawsuit brought against Nekschot by the Dutch convert and imam Abdul Jabbar Van de Ven in 2005.

Nekschot and his publisher have long been threatened with death from Muslim and so-called “ anarchist ” circles. Neckschot's identity is therefore kept secret. His attorney, publisher and supporters are concerned that his identity may be revealed by the pending trial. The trial has sparked a nationwide censorship debate .
