history

In 1879 the German industrialists Schmidt brothers founded a factory "Westfalia" for wire, nail and iron products in Šančiai. It later became one of the largest metal factories in the Russian Empire. In 1913 the factory had 1,300 employees. In 1922 the brothers Jonas Vailokaitis and Juozas Vailokaitis bought this factory. It was later renamed Akcinė bendrovė "Metalas". In 1938 the factory- foundry was the largest private company in Lithuania with a capital of 7.5 million litas . In Soviet Lithuania , Greifenbergeris sanitary equipment factory was housed here from 1961. Sinks, bathtubs, radiators were produced. In 1976 there were 1000 employees. During the Soviet occupation, the plant was called "Metalas" by the Šančiai population. A thick smoke went over the factory chimneys, turning the surrounding districts too brown. The government gave out the milk free of charge as compensation for the damaged health. Because of the plant, Šančiai was considered to be the district of dirty and wretched workers.
