Border crossing Duderstadt / Worbis
The Duderstadt / Worbis border crossing was a border point between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany to be passed by car or bus .
location
The border crossing Duderstadt / Worbis was located between the Lower Saxony Gerblingerode and in the district of Erfurt located Teistungen in Eichsfeld .
history
In 1945 a barrier was built between the British and Soviet occupation zones on the former Reichsstrasse between Worbis and Duderstadt . In the course of the following years, cross-border traffic was increasingly restricted until it was finally completely discontinued in 1952.
After the Basic Treaty came into force in 1972, four new border crossings were planned between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany. In November 1972, the expansion of the border crossing began on the current federal highway and former trunk road 247 until it was opened on June 21, 1973. It could be used primarily as part of the small border traffic for residents of the districts near the border.
The GDR control facilities were located north of Teistungen below the former Teistungenburg monastery . The lower monastery mill, which was located here up to this point in time, was demolished for this purpose, only the former mill tower remained and was expanded to become the command tower of the border troops at the GÜSt.
The facilities of the control point of the German customs and the Federal Border Guard were on the southern outskirts of Gerblingerode. From 1973 to 1989 around 6 million travelers used the Duderstadt-Worbis border crossing.
today
In 1995, the Eichsfeld Border Country Museum was opened to commemorate the division of Germany, the establishment of the border crossing and the opening of the border in 1989 .
